Young inventor Richard Turere talks about his invention “lion lights,” an elegant way he designed to protect his family’s cattle from lion attacks.

13-year-old Richard Turere is a young Maasai man living with his family in the wilderness of the Kenya savanna. Their home is on the edge of an un-fenced national park full of rhino, giraffe, buffalo and lions. Richard has held the honored chore of tending his father’s cattle since the age of 9, but in his free time he loves to tinker with all types of electrical gadgets. After dismantling the few household appliances his family owns, Richard taught himself how to fix them, and put them back together. After that he started inventing. He has fit his parents’ home with fans made from car parts and other components he managed to harvest from junkyards. he then moved on to building all manner of inventions for their neighbors and the surrounding community.

His most important invention, and the one that brought him to do this TEDTalk is “lion lights,” which is a fence for the cattle at night and is made of basic pieces (solar charging cells, flashlight parts). The “lion lights” have proven to quickly and effectively scare the lions away from his father’s herd.
